What to See in Spoleto: Discover the Torre dell’Olio and More

The Torre dell’Olio (Oil Tower), a historic landmark dating back to the 13th century, is a must-see in Spoleto. Located in the heart of the city, near Porta Fuga, it is seamlessly integrated into Palazzo Vigili. Standing at an impressive height of 45.50 meters, it is the tallest tower in Spoleto and a testament to the city’s medieval history.

The Name and History Behind the Torre dell’Olio

The tower’s name originates from the ancient practice of pouring boiling oil on attackers as a defensive measure. Although the current structure was built in the 1200s, historical evidence suggests that a similar fortification existed here as early as 217 B.C.. This was the year when the citizens of Spoleto successfully repelled the Carthaginian troops of Hannibal. In honor of this event, the gate below the tower is known as Porta Fuga—a name that symbolizes the fleeing Carthaginian force.

Architectural Marvel of Torre dell’Olio

The tower has a rectangular base measuring 3.80 x 7.00 meters, with walls ranging from 1.70 meters thick at the base to 1.00 meters at the top. The lower 27 meters of the tower are incorporated into Palazzo Vigili, while the upper 19 meters rise freely. Built with pebble and stone masonry bound by lime mortar, the tower once played a crucial role in the city’s defensive walls. Small slanted openings along the façade provide ventilation and visibility, while its vaulted internal spaces reflect the architectural ingenuity of the Middle Ages.

Can You Visit the Torre dell’Olio?

Currently, the Torre dell’Olio is privately owned and not open to the public. However, you can still admire its majestic structure from the outside as you stroll through Spoleto’s historic streets.
